Why is The Z Chair so good for posture and back health?

So, here’s the technical stuff…

The Z Chair has a precisely designed angled, forward-sloping seat.

Most standard chairs have a horizontal seat part that we sit on. When we sit the position of our pelvis changes (rolls backwards) and the natural spinal curves are reduced or even disappear.

Our postural muscles fatigue and we slowly slouch backwards. This loads our spine and discs in a detrimental way and is a major cause of back pain, disc injury, and disablement.

However, when you sit on the gently angled Z Chair, your thighs will slope slightly downwards and your knees will be lower than your hips.

This precise design helps your pelvis stay in a more natural position and encourages the spine to maintain its natural healthy curves. Better posture equals better health and less pain.

The Z Chair position also helps to engage your postural coremuscles (in what we call active sitting) which encourages better spinal health and posture.

This is what the professionals say…

Kathryn (Osteopath)

The Z Chair to me is more than just a comfortable sit. It definitely helps to improve your posture as well as manage and help prevent any musculoskeletal issues you may have. It tucks away nicely under a desk at the end of the day too! Well done team Sit Straight on providing a healthy, sustainable, ergonomic chair.

Charlie (Physiotherapist)

The Z Chair has been a really positive change at work. It allows me to sit more comfortably. I get less tension in my back when sat on the Z Chair and I definitely focus better. I now also have a Z Chair at home and find it far more comfortable to sit on for desk work than a traditional office chair.

Katie (GP)

I am interested in how posture and sitting can have a positive impact on health and wellbeing and I’m excited to find a chair that is extremely comfortable, sustainably produced and well priced. It looks very nice too and fits well in the house. I use it when sitting for work and for long zoom calls or lectures at home.

FAQs

Who is The Z Chair designed for?

The Z Chair is designed for ALL.

It is ideal for desk/office use but will also work really well as a dining chair or a chair for everyday use.

No matter what you are doing, or where you are doing it, if you are sitting, the Z Chair will help you sit better.

How does the Z Chair work?

Sitting on the Z Chair’s gently sloping seat will effortlessly promote a naturally good posture. This sitting position helps maintain healthy and natural spinal curves.

Why doesn't The Z Chair have any back?

The Z Chair is designed so that you dont need a back support.

In the angled/sloped sitting position your pelvis and spine will remain closer to a natural standing position, so you will find yourself naturally sitting up straighter without the need for back support.

We call this active sitting– your body’s spinal, postural muscles are activated (just like when you are standing).

In fact, slouching on The Z Chair is deliberately not easy and if you feel you need a break then its time to take a break, stand up and move. (See breaks below).

There are no arm rests on The Z Chair - have you forgotten them?

A wise Osteopath once said, give the body a crutch and it will lean on it”.

With healthy active ‘core’ muscles and good spinal posture you don’t need arms rest to lean on and you will naturally sit straight.

Are breaks recommended with The Z Chair?

No matter how well we sit, our spinal joints and muscles need to move regularly to stay healthy. Movement is health.

Whenever you sit and whatever you sit on, we recommend taking ‘micro breaks’ (a 30-60 second break) every 20-30 minutes.
Stand up, stretch and move. Micro breaks give your body, eyes and brain a rest. It gets the blood circulating through the body and joints moving.

Research studies have shown that micro-breaks can also make you more productive. Click Here

Why is the Z Chair good for me?

Sitting on the Z Chair promotes a natural, upright position. This healthy posture will help prevent against spinal and low back conditions. The Z Chair will also encourage core muscle activity keeping your postural muscles fit.

Why is the Z Chair not adjustable?

The Z Chair will accommodate people of varying heights. It is designed so that no adjustment is necessary. Users will naturally find a comfortable position on the seat whatever their height.

The sloping seat allows users of different height to sit comfortably on the Z Chair.

It works best with people between 52” and 62” (1.58m and 1.89m) in height. How? The taller you are the further back on the seat you will need to sit. Conversely, if you are shorter you will sit towards the front. You will naturally find a comfortable position.

Through our research and development, we found that although adjustability can be useful, in practice chairs are rarely adjusted to the correct height for the individual, and can often do more harm than good.

What if I’m very tall or very short? If you are not within these optimal height range you will still gain benefit from the chair, but the effect may be reduced slightly. However, please contact us info@sitstraight.co.uk, as we are developing chairs for all heights, including children.

Why is The Z Chair so good for posture and back health?

Most chairs have a horizontal seat part that we sit on. When we sit the position of the pelvis changes (rolls backwards) and the natural spinal curves are reduced or even disappear.

Our postural ‘core’ muscles fatigue and we slowly slouch backwards. This loads our spine and discs in a detrimental way. This is a major cause of back pain, disc injury, and disablement.

The Z Chair has a precisely designed angled, forward-sloping seat.

When you sit on The Z Chair, your thighs will slope slightly downwards, and your knees will be lower than your hips.

This precise design helps your pelvis stay in a more natural position and encourages the spine to maintain its natural healthy curves. Better posture equals better health and less pain.

The Z Chair position also helps to engage your postural ‘core’ muscles (in what we call ‘active sitting’) which encourages better spinal health and posture.

What's wrong with conventional chairs?

Most conventional seating does not naturally and effortlessly encourage good overall posture.

They instead provide ever-increasing levels of support and comfort, which in turn weakens core strength, compromises posture, and can cause chronic back problems over time.

In reality, we need to sit actively. We need to sit straight. We need to sit with back health in mind.

Conventional chairs are often big, bulky, and in many cases impractical for the working environment (especially for an increasing number of post-Covid homeworkers).

Chairs marketed as ergonomic rely on the user to adjust correctly. Poorly adjusted chairs often makes them un-ergonomic and can lead to significant back health issues.

The durability of conventional seating is often poor, parts break, and many end up in landfill sites.

Conventional seating is often bad for the environment. The Carbon footprint of the average office chair is estimated to be 70-75kg CO2E (Link needed).

Cheaper chairs fail us on the above points, while ergonomic seating is often exclusively priced and out of reach for many consumers.

Is desk set up and desk height important?

Absolutely! For some, sitting on The Z Chair may mean they are sitting slightly higher.

To maximize the benefits of The Z Chair you may need to look at your desk or screen height.

For laptop users you should use a laptop stand and use a separate mouse and keyboard. We have produced a set up and desk solution help guide: Click Here

What makes the ergonomics of The Z Chair different?

The specifically designed angled seat of the Z Chair puts your pelvis in a natural forward rotated position. This is closer to its position when we stand. This encourages our spine to maintain its natural curves (as if we were standing).

The result is a much more ergonomic and natural sitting position. This position requires far less effort to maintain and is far better for spinal health. It also helps us to engage our spinal ‘core’ muscles.

How can the Z Chair help prevent injury and reduce back pain?

The Z Chair encourages users to naturally and effortlessly maintain a healthy and natural spinal curve.

It also helps the ‘core muscles’ to stay ‘engaged’. These muscles are your supportive, stabilising muscles around the spine. Keeping them fit, well-conditioned and ‘engaged’ protects the back and massively reduces the likelihood of back injury.

When we slouch large compressive loads put adverse strain on the lower spine and can contribute to strains and injuries (such as slipped discs).

When standing our natural spinal curves dissipate these forces efficiently in a healthy way, so not to damage the spine. The Z Chair helps maintain these natural spinal curves and discourages slouching.

Which way round do I sit?

Always sit with your legs sloping downwards so that your knees are below your hips.

My desk is too low?

For some users sitting on the Z Chair will mean that you sit slightly taller and higher.

This may mean your desk height or screen height is then slightly lower than optimal.

To gain maximal benefit from the Z Chair you may need to adjust your desk or screen height. Please read the desk height adjustment document for help and advice: Click Here

I can’t get comfortable?

Most users will immediately find the Z Chair comfortable and feel the postural benefits straight away.

For some, the change in posture can initially be a little unusual and take some adjustment. This is because the body and spine will need to get use to a new (improved) posture.

If you do feel some discomfort at first, then use the Z Chair little and often until your body adapts to the new position.

Alex Prince BSc Hons (Osteopathy)

CEO & Founder

I’m Alex Prince. I’ve been practicing as an Osteopath for over 25 years.

For a long time I’ve been frustrated that most chairs discourage good posture leading to pain, and disablement. Too many of my patients suffer with posture-related pain.

My Osteopathic view is that much of the seating available poorly serves the needs of our backs and necks.

Over the years I’ve often thought there must be a better, simpler solution to seating.

My vision is to revolutionise the way we sit. Fundamentally, I am driven to improve health, wellness and quality of life for as many people as I can reach.

The first step is the Z Chair.

Using my bio-mechanical experience and expertise, the Sit Straight team and I have developed our first health-focused chair.

I also have a deep love for nature, sport and the outdoors. I appreciate the fine and precarious balance our beautiful world is in, and as such I am driven to ensure our products support our environment.
